Art is taught as a discrete subject, across the school. Pupils are taught skills and knowledge in drawing, painting, collage, printing and 3D work. Children study three units of art each year. Not only are the skills and techniques sequenced progressively across the units, great thought has gone into the pieces of art that pupils study, so that children can access and engage in art lessons, can experience success in art and see the breadth of what is labelled ‘art.’. Art at BPAN is therefore aspirational yet accessible to all.

We take our inspiration from the artists of the past and present, from national and international artists and also from different movements and styles. We acknowledge that art is for everyone and that although traditional art was created having mastered a set of specific skills and techniques, art has since developed facilitating the exploration of media and techniques, the emotions and thoughts of the artist and the impact on the viewer. By discussing art, children develop their critical and creative thinking skills to build their knowledge and understanding of materials and techniques, developing their ability to respond to a variety of stimuli.
