History

History is the study of the past, particularly people and events of the past. History takes the form of a tremendous story, filled with great personalities and tales of turmoil and triumph.

In school, we explain that the second something is in the past, it becomes part of history. The past is made up of all the time and events that have already gone by.

History at our school is taught as a discrete subject, meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on prior learning.

Children explore history in Early Years as part of Knowledge and Understanding of the World.  Through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children study carefully selected units of history each year. The history units help children to: know and understand Britain’s past and that of the wider world; chronology; changes and developments throughout history; and significant historical events, people and places.

We utilise the Ark scheme of work to support our intent and implementation. It supports effective teaching and learning through the provision of high-quality resources, including medium-term planning and subject knowledge enhancement.
